Construction of a drum pump

The principle of the drum pump has proven its worth in the field of pumps for decades and is suitable for most applications as well as industrial branches. The drum pump belongs to the family of the axial-acting centrifugal pumps. By many customers it is also called a rod pump or submersible pump.

A drum pump consists of a drive motor and the pump tube suitable for the respective application, which stands as an suction tube vertically in the bunghole of a 200 liter barrel or an IBC container and represents the actual pump.

In addition to electric motors in 230, 115, 24 volts and 12 volts, air operated motors with a max. 6 bar operating pressure can be used.

The drive motors are quickly and easily connected to the suction tube of our drum pump by a handwheel so that different pump tubes can be combined with the same drive motor.

The actual suction tube of the drum pump (made of polypropylene, PVDF, aluminum or stainless steel, depending on the medium) consists of an outer tube, an inner tube and a drive shaft made of stainless steel or hastelloy that rotates inside the inner tube.

At the upper end of the shaft is the so-called pump coupling, which is driven by the motor coupling of the electric motor or air operated motor.

The pump shaft is mounted in the outlet of the drum pump in a bearing unit in which high-quality ball bearings are installed for high number of revolutions. At the lower end of the drive shaft is the pump wheel of the drum pump, which, similar to a ship’s screw, is propeller-like constructed and is designated as a rotor or an impeller by experts.

Above the impeller of the drum pump is the pump housing, in which a very chemical resistant coal bearing has its place.
The coal bearing, on the one hand, supports the drive shaft of the drum pump in the lower region of the suction tube, and on the other hand seals the area between the drive shaft and the inner tube.

From the beginning, we use the coal bearing in our drum pumps, which is available in a version for the food sector (natural resin) in addition to a chemical version (synthetic resin).

Our constructors have explicitly decided against a mechanical seal, so that our drum pumps can also run dry without being damaged immediately.

In order for the drum pump to transfer the medium, the rotor must always be completely covered with medium. If this is in case, the impeller, which has a distance of about 2 cm from the drum bottom and rotates at 10,000 rpm, transfers the medium axial and thus parallel to the drive shaft between the inner and outer tubes in the direction of the pressure port.

The customer can connect a hose on the pressure port of the drum pump using the supplied hose connection.

Matching PVC hoses, conductive universal chemical and solvent hoses made of EPDM, multi purpose chemical hoses made of a conductive cross-linked polyethylene (with FDA approval), oil hoses and food hoses we can offer from stock.

When pumping highly flammable media in the Ex-zone 0 with a firing point below 55°C or when used in potential explosive areas (Ex-zone 1 or 2), a conductive drum pump hose is fixed at the hose connection of the stainless steel drum pump (external thread 1 1/4 „) with conductive hose connection made of stainless steel and aluminum clamps.

Special lengths of the drum pump from 200 to
3000 mm

Due to the complex construction of our drum pump, it is not possible to extend the length of the pump on site by suction hose or to shorten the supposed empty pump tube if necessary. As described above, the pump tube of a drum pump is not an empty suction lance but an immersion tube with a rather complex structure.

However, if you need special pumping lengths for your applications, we can supply our drum pump from polypropylene, PVDF, aluminum or stainless steel immediately from stock in a length of 700, 1,000, 1,200, 1,500 and 1,800 mm. The length of the pump tube of a drum pump is always calculated from the end of the pump tube (pump foot) to the center of the delivery connection on the pressure side. In order to empty a 200 liter barrel, you need a drum pump with an immersion tube length of 1,000 mm. For a 1,000 liter/IBC containers, our drum pumps with a pump tube length of 1,200 mm have proved.

In principle, we can produce pumping lengths of 200 mm to 3,000 mm for your applications. Within one working day we can realize this with the drum pump materials polypropylene, PVDF and aluminum.

If, however, the length of the pump tube made of plastics is more than 2,000 mm, the technicians or salespeople must check whether the polypropylene or PVDF drum pumps have the necessary stability regarding the pumped medium and its temperature and whether the intended purpose of the customer is to be solved with a drum pump.

Since our drum pump contains rotating components with velocities of more than 10,000 rpm and consequently the occurrence of heat development can not be completely avoided, a drum pump is basically not suitable for continuous use.

For such applications, a slowly rotating eccentric screw pump or a self-priming and dry-running diaphragm pump should be used.

Easy maintenance of our drum pump

Before purchasing a pump the user should become familiar  with the pump in order to carry out maintenance independently.

By means of a bore in the pump housing, the medium basically also reaches the inner tube of the drum pump. In the inner tube, therefore, the liquid level is always the same as in the drum or the container to be emptied. When emptying the drum with our drum pumps, the medium level in the drum and that in the inner pipe sink evenly.

The longer our drum pump has been used, the more the  carbon bearing, in which the drive shaft rotates at 10,000 rpm, will be worn-out over time. One day, the clearance between the shaft and the carbon bearing will become so great that a pressure builds up in the inner tube for the first time and the pumping medium consequently rises perpendicularly upwards in the direction of the pressure nozzle in the shaft guide tube.

As a result of the worn-out carbon bearing, you will only notice a minimal medium leak at the side bores below the pressure connection. At this point, a drum pump must be stopped immediately so that you can replace the pump housing with the carbon bearing.

Without replacement of this wearing part, there is a risk that the medium you are transferring will enter the bearing unit where high-quality ball bearings are located or later even get into the drum pump motor.

On our drum pump we grant you a guarantee of one year.
Except, however all rotating pump parts, which wear out.

In our drum pumps, the spare parts are primarily the impeller at the lower end of the drive shaft (rotor for high delivery capacity or impeller for high pressure), the pump housing with the carbon bearing made of synthetic resin or a natural resin for the food sector as well as the pump coupling and the corresponding motor coupling on the drive side.

The rotor or impeller and the carbon bearing in the pump housing can be protected against particles by the use of a foot strainer made of polypropylene or stainless steel, which is simply mounted over the pump foot of the drum pump.

The use of a filter of this type considerably increases the service life of these wear parts and thus of your drum pump.
If necessary, we can also offer you the rotor or impeller from stainless steel full material.

As a result of the clear construction of the immersion tubes of our drum pump, repairs and the associated exchange of wear parts can be carried out independently by our customers on site.

No special tools required for disassembly or assembly of our pumping stations. If it is more comfortable or easier for you, we can carry out repairs or general overhauls also in our house at a very reasonable price.

Applications for our drum pump

A drum pump is primarily used to pump fluids from drums or containers. The transfer pumps, which are either mobile but also stationary, are suitable for almost all medium whether viscous or slightly viscous (max. 1,000 mPas), neutral or aggressive, combustible or not highly flammable, with or without solids.

With the shown principle of a drum pump, our most powerful universal motor (JP-280 with 825 Watt) can be used to transport all low-viscous to medium-viscous liquids from drums and containers.

For the drum pump based on the principle of the centrifugal pump, the absolute limit range for the viscosity is about 1,000 mPas. If the medium is more viscous, the use of an eccentric screw drum pump or a air operated diaphragm pump is recommended.

In addition, you can use the JP-280 engine to pump all media up to a maximum density of 1.9. Our drum pump, for example, has transferred significantly more than 30 liters per minute and has a discharge height of 8 m for a customer with 96% sulfuric acid.

Depending on the medium used, our customers or our sales representatives can choose between four different pump tube materials when selecting a drum pump: Polypropylene, PVDF, aluminum and stainless steel 316Ti. The exact medium, the application temperature and the environment are decisive for the selection of the appropriate pump material.

The plastics polypropylene and PVDF are used in the drum pump range for neutral, aggressive and non combustible media, in particular for acids, alkalis and cleaning agents.

A drum pump made of polypropylene can be used for nearly all standard chemicals in the chemical or electroplating industry up to a temperature of 50°C.

Our drum pumps from PP are sold every day for media such as sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, lightly concentrated sulfuric acid, iron-II-chloride, iron-III-chloride, etc. Only if a high aggressive media such as sulfuric acid over 90%, chromic acid, hydrofluoric acid or nitric acid, is pumped the pump tube of the drum pump must be made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride). This highly chemical-resistant pumping material can also be used up to a medium temperature of 90°C.

In the petroleum sector as well as in the automotive industry, drum pumps made of aluminum are mainly required for pumping  diesel, gear oil, heating oil, hydraulic oil, machine oil, mineral oils and motor oil, etc.

With a drum pump like the JP-280 Alu 1,000 Set, you can pump all low-viscous, medium-viscous, non-combustible mineral oil products up to a maximum viscosity of 1,000 mPas from balloons, canisters, 200 liter drums or 1,000 liters/IBC containers.

Our hand pumps JP-03 and JP-04 blue, which can be used for nearly all containers due to their 2″ thread as well as the optional threaded adapters, have proven themselves in the sector of the automotive industry or the petroleum industry.

Hand pumps are always an alternative to an electric or air operated drum pump if only small quantities are taken from drums or canisters or the customer would only use an electric drum pump occasionally.

In addition to the materials mentioned, our production program of drum pumps is complemented by pumps made of stainless steel 316Ti. These high-quality and conductive pumps have proven to be useful in pumping of highly flammable liquids as well as in explosive environments as well as in the food industry and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Due to the conductivity and the type examination certificate for the Ex Zone 0, the pump tube made of stainless steel are used especially for combustible media such as solvents, alcohol, fuels or thinly liquid paints and varnishes.

The electric motors of our drum pump are also equipped with a over load protection switch with integrated low voltage release which prevents the pump from re-starting after a voltage drop.

Of course, we can also supply the electric motors for the external control via a control cabinet without the function of a low voltage release. You can also adjust the pumping capacity of the drum pumps by means of an optional speed control and the air operated motors via the compressed air supply.
